Our Rotary Club is proud to be able to accomplish many service activities for its size (approximately 45 members).  Through our projects done in conjunction with the City of Huntington Beach and Golden West College, we are gaining much recognition and appreciation from the local community.   Listed below are our yearly activities:

Community Service:

Science Showtime:  Our Club, in conjunction with Golden West College, sponsors Science Showtime.  The science faculty of GWC opens their classrooms and provides hands on activities geared toward 5th and 6th graders to raise their interest in STEM fields.  Our Club helps advertise the event, produces and delivers flyers to 5 local School Districts, provides exhibits, serve as guides, and helps with the classroom demonstrations.  The money to hold the event is obtained from local business sponsors. 2500 students and family members attended this year.

Food Drive:  We collect food at local grocery stores and give it to various agencies such as the Orange County Food Bank who distribute it to those in need in Orange County.  With help from Interact Club Students and Boy Scouts, we collect food from local grocery stores in the area during a Saturday and Sunday.  5,000 pounds of food was collected this year.

Literacy Project:  We provide books for summer reading to Sun View Elementary School, which has many low-income students.  We also read to the students at the school.  Approximately 800 books are provided each year.  In addition, we have provided computers and other much needed teaching supplies.

International Service, Grants, Youth Service:

Interact Clubs:  Our Club supports and provides advisors for Interact Clubs at both Ocean View High School and Huntington Beach High School.  The Clubs meet once a week and participate in many community service projects.

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA): Each spring we send between 7-11 high school students to a mountain retreat weekend.   They gain leadership and team-building skills and make new friends from all walks of life.

Beach Weekend:  We conduct a “Beach Weekend” for 30-40 Rotary International Foreign Exchange Students from all over the world.  The weekend consists of an entire day at the  beach where surfboards and instructors as well as boogie boards are provided to the students to experience our beautiful beach.  The following day they experience kayaking and sailing in Huntington Harbour.

LIGA Heart Project:  Doctors are provided to perform heart operations on children in Mexico.  Our Club was the Primary International Club and the Ciudad Obregon Club in Mexico was the Host Club which found and approved patients and made arrangements for the operations.

Dental Equipment:  We obtained a District Grant to help purchase dental equipment for annual trips to Mexico to hold dental clinics as part of the Rot-A-Dent Program by Newport Sunrise Rotary.  We also collect toys and clothing to be distributed to the Mexican children during the trips.

Robyne’s Nest:  We obtained a District Grant to help this non-profit to rent a container for storage of needed food and clothing items for local High School students in need of support.

Fund Raising:  Profits from our two fundraisers provide funds to help eradicate skin cancer and build an All- Access playground on the beach:

Surfboards on Parade:  Our Club founded Surfboards on Parade to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of surfing at Huntington Beach.  Acclaimed artists were invited to create art on surfboards  made by  legendary surfboard shapers.  The 30 surfboards were displayed in various locations in HB and then auctioned off at a Gala.  We will hold this fundraiser every two years.

Huntington Haunt:  In conjunction with the City, we produced the Huntington Haunt at the iconic Newland House in HB.  The Haunt was part haunted house, part theater, and part interactive moving play.  We will hold this event every Halloween season.

Social:  We hold many social events throughout the year, beginning with:

Concerts in the Park:  Our Club attends Sunday concerts in Central Park on Sundays during the summer. Our Club purchased the bandshell for the city.  Our two High School Interact Clubs raise money for their yearly activities by helping to operate a Food Booth at the concerts.

Annual parties include:

-Pig Roast , hosted by Nancy and Doug Gahn

Halloween Party , hosted by Mary and John Baley

-Christmas soup party/Belmont Shore parade, hosted by Mary Kinkella

-Christmas  boat parade party

-Chinese New Year party

-Wine tasting party

-The President’s “Throwout” party

Evening meetings:  In 2015 we added Tuesday evening meetings to attract those who cannot attend meetings in the middle of the day.  We are all part of the same club, volunteer at the same events, and can visit either meeting anytime.  Currently evening meetings are held at the Coaches Restaurant at 6:30PM.

Special projects:  Occasionally we participate in special projects.  In the past ,  Huntington Beach was a Host Town for the Special Olympics.  Our Club joined with other service clubs and hosted lunch to the Olympians from several countries spending the weekend in our city.
